What does "vitamin" actually mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. The body cannot make vitamins; therefore, they must be obtained from food.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve readily in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified by their biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A - Essential for healthy growth and health maintenance.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - Vital for healthy bones and teeth
  • E - Required for good vision & reproduction
  • K - required for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - essential for strong bones, teeth and tendons
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R - Red blood cells are made from red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies according to age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants below one year old require 700mg per day. But, between 9 months to 12 months, the amount drops to 500mg per day.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant and lactating need more nutrients than the RDA. Pregnant women need 4000 micrograms per dayduring pregnancy and 2500 micrograms per day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers require 5000 micrograms daily when breast milk production is occurring.
